Our relationship to food and our body complicated and is greatly influenced by the culture in which we live. Society invites girls and women to focus on gaining their sense of self-worth through their looks and body size/image. Preoccupation with body weight, and body image can be a sign that we have internalized this often unrealistic view of oneself. Self-limiting food intake, severe weight loss strategies, overuse of diet pills,laxatives, excessively exercising can have devastatingly effects on our bodies, and our relationships. Our bodies experience the impact of such behaviors by a reduction in potassium and chloride levels, electrolyte and fluid imbalances, heart and organ dsyfuntion, as well as, brain atrophy. Our brain needs at least 500 calories a day just to fufill necessary functioning.
Our personal relationships, also can suffer the effects of disorded eating. As the eating disorder becomes more pronounced, individuals can isolate from initmate connections, spending more time tending to/worring about their, relating to their eating disorder. Eating disorders often produce feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and poor self-worth. Many individuals suffer for years with these feelings unable to talk about them or seek support.
During treatment you will be invited to identify the role your disordered eating plays in your life. Explore what emotions are under the surface of the behaviors, examine concepts of perfectionism, control, anger, fear and family dynamic issues that keep us stuck in this process. A detailed assement will be conducted to to help set therapeutic goals aimed at reducing the harmful effects of disordered eating, and helping re-established a balanced connection to food, healthy body image, and nutrition.
